The Responsible Coexistence campaign in Galápagos emerged following the approval of the new San Cristóbal ordinance (2021) centered on dogs, cats and domestic animals. The ordinance is designed to improve neighborhood dynamics, protect endemic species, and, in doing so, safeguard tourism as one of Galápagos’ primary economic drivers.
To achieve this, we have developed a Responsible Coexistence booklet, which will be delivered to every home in San Cristóbal and Floreana during the last quarter of 2024.
You can download the original spanish version here.
The booklet’s content includes the most important rules of the ordinance. Additionally, it provides fundamental health recommendations, the benefits of sterilization, urban myths, an analysis of animal violence as a warning for social violence, and recommendations in the field of family animal nutrition.
The Municipal Government of San Cristóbal is responsible for regulating the coexistence between the public, animals and urban wildlife since the approval of the ordinance. This is essential not only for the protection of endemic species, but also, to provide a more orderly City, harmonious neighborhoods, and also to provide a better experience for tourists and visitors.
Founded in 1975, the Franz Weber Foundation drives campaigns for the protection of nature, animals, and local communities across the globe. In Galápagos, we were involved in the creation of the ordinance upon which we build our educational campaigns around of. This joint initiative will benefit the community and the endemic species of the Galápagos.
Here, you will find the rescued animals that are seeking for a new home. You can even bring it to your country if the selection process is succesfull.
